Weaning your baby – all you need to know!

So your baby is hungry and you’re about to embark on a fantastic food adventure! But where to begin …

Before you start you need to be prepared and make sure that the decisions you make are ones that suit your lifestyle. Things to consider are…

Highchair

There are tons on the market so just go for one that suits you. Things to look out for are

–      Do you want a tray?
–      Is the tray removable?
–      Is the height adjustable?
–      Is the height correct for your kitchen table set up?

There is also the question of do you need a full highchair straight away? We used a Mamas and Papas baby Snug until Effie was 9 months as it was easier for us at that time. Plus they are transportable so we also had a little seat for her if we were visiting or out and about.

For our full chair we chose the Stokke tripp-trapp. I love it! It’s smart and functional and last forever. The benefit of this is that it’s an ergonomically designed chair, so it can be adapted as the child grows. I know a 14 yr old who still uses it at the table for homework!

Bibs, crockery, cutlery and water cup

Again there are thousands on the market. So pick the ones you like!

Things to look out for

Plates/bowls

–      suction bottom
–      melamine/bamboo wont break
–      plastic will break if thrown!
–      1 of each is enough if you wash it up by hand

Cutlery

–      long handle
–      flat head as food gets stuck in a deep spoon

Bibs

–      waterproof
–      washable by hand and machine
–      long sleeves
–      you’ll need at least 2
–       absorbent

Water cup

–      removal valve to allow free flow
–      handles
–      lid for travelling

Floor Protection

Another thing that makes my life easier, that you might want to consider is purchasing a mat for the floor. Personally we have a bit of American cloth that I can easily wipe clean.
